Vehicle Overview: (Include this description in Project tab) The Beetle featured a rear-located, rear-wheel drive, air-cooled four-cylinder, boxer engine in a two-door bodywork featuring a flat front windscreen, accommodating four passengers and providing luggage storage under the front bonnet and behind the rear seat. This alignment created a streamlined design which provided a coefficient of drag of about 0.41 which added to the efficiency of the powertrain. The bodywork attached with eighteen bolts to its nearly flat chassis which featured a central structural tunnel. Front and rear suspension featured torsion bars along with front stabilizer bar – providing independent suspension at all wheels. Certain initial features were subsequently revised, including mechanical drum brakes, split rear windows, mechanical direction-indicators and the non-synchronized gearbox. The engine with its 1300cc capacity churned out 51 PS of power which was just enough to reach speeds upto 100 km/h. Its engine, transmission, and cylinder heads were constructed of light alloy. Engine intake air passed through a metallic filter, while heavier particles were captured by an oil bath. The steering featured a hydraulic damper that absorbed steering irregularities. The iconic beetle still holds its unique lines and curves even today which makes it a one of a kind vehicle.
Owning a beetle always gives a sense of pride to the owner and a sense of honour to restore this beauty. We had the privilege to work on the 1966 VW Beetle which was brought to us by the in extremely poor state. The car was completely ceased and there was attention needed to each and every part of the car. To start with, the engine was completely disassembled and each and every part was inspected to understand which parts can be restored and if we had to replace the parts. It was a happy sign for us when we realised that most of the parts could be restored. The team then started the engine overhaul process which went as per the plan. The transmission was also ceased and had to be completely restored. All major systems like the suspension, steering and the brakes were also overhauled. There was a new electrical harness installed in the beetle. The chassis was all rusted and special care had to be taken to get all the rust off the frame. All the joints were jammed and taking the rust off the surface demanded more time from the team. After all the rust was removed, the car was coated with anti-rust and then painted in a silver base colour. As far as the body work of the beetle is concerned, it turned out to be a challenge. The floor had rust which was scraped off completely. The body panels where the rust was prominent was carefully sheared and repaired. The project is in d last stage and this beauty will soon rule the roads. Stay tuned to autorounders to witness the rebirth of this legend.
